Manager, Compensation and Benefits Overview

  • Oversees the development, administration, and communication of competitive compensation and benefits programs that align with strategy and successfully attract, retain, and reward high performing and diverse talent.
  • Responsible for all aspects of the company’s leave of absence (LOA) programs, processes and analysis, including leaves under the Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA), paid leave and unpaid leave, and paid leave programs. 

Essential Duties

  • Leads the development, implementation, and administration of all compensation programs including job descriptions, job classification systems, base pay, annual salary increase processes, and includes market survey benchmarking and FLSA determinations.
  • Responsible for the development, analysis, and administration of executive compensation programs, sales compensation programs, annual and long-term incentive programs, and deferred compensation plans.
  • Oversees the design, administration, and communication of all benefits programs including medical, dental, vision, life, disability, paid leave, supplemental benefits, 401(k), wellness, EAP, and leave of absence programs. Completes annual review, recommendations, and renewal processes.
  • Ensures that programs are current, competitive, and in compliance using internal and external data, industry trends, best practices, and tax and legislative requirements. Tracks and reports on performance indicators and trends. Creates and provides compensation training for employees and management.
  • Collaborates and partners with HR team and management to understand their challenges related to compensation, benefits, and other reward programs and key issues in attracting, motivating, and retaining high quality, diverse talent.
  • Oversees open enrollment processes each year, including collaborating with benefits vendors, determining changes for benefits, communicating changes to employees, delivering employee presentations, and ensuring changes are processed within deadlines.
  • Manages 401(k) plan administration and compliance. Performs plan audits, true-up and SERP calculations, and owns annual 401(k) audit process with external auditors.
  • Maintains knowledge and ensures compliance with HIPAA, ERISA, FLSA, FMLA, ACA, COBRA, and other applicable tax laws and regulations, including wage and hour laws. Ensures adequate controls, compliance reviews, and audits are in place and all plan documents and Summary Plan Descriptions are updated and stored for accessibility. Responsible for the annual preparation of the Form 5500s and the Summary Annual Reports, 1094/1095 forms, and 401(k) audit.
  • Oversees administration of and ensures compliance of LOA programs including Paid Family, FMLA, and the ADA interactive process for compliance and efficiency.
  • Manages vendor/partner relationships for all benefit and compensation service providers.
  • Leads compensation and benefits merger and acquisition activities, including due diligence, risk analysis, integration, and onboarding. 
  • Maintains awareness of current and emerging trends in compensation and benefits with a focus on product delivery and support.

Management Level Expectations

  • Manages employee and team performance, quality, and issue resolution; provides training, coaching, and oversight of team; provides employee feedback on a bi-weekly or weekly basis.
  • Leads collaboration across teams on projects and customer issue resolution.
  • Responsible for budget development of area and assists in managing the budget.
  • Provides constructive two-way communication and feedback.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Exceptional knowledge of compensation plans and methodologies.
  • Demonstrated ability to evaluate, design, and recommend market competitive programs.
  • Strong working knowledge of benefit program development, design, and federal and state laws affecting benefits practices.
  • Strong leadership, organizational, decision-making, and analytical skills. Ability to manage multiple projects and collaborate with multiple stakeholders and across the HR team.
  • Exceptional customer service orientation and ability to work with all levels of staff and executives.
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills.
  • High level of accuracy, attention to detail, and ability to keep strict confidences.
  • Proven abilities in developing and administering benefits policies, practices, and procedures and remaining current on changes including health and welfare, retirement, supplemental plans, and LOA programs.

Required Education and Experience 

  • Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources Management, Business Administration, or related field required.
  • Five years of experience with compensation and benefits programs with at least two years management of compensation and benefits staff.
  • Knowledge of FMLA, ADA, and multi-state requirements.
  • Or equivalent military experience. 

Preferred Education and Experience 

  • Professional certification in benefits, compensation, or Human Resources.
  • Minimum five years’ corporate benefits management experience to include health and welfare and retirement plans in a multi-state environment.
  • Experience with one or more of the following: self-insured plans, mergers and acquisitions including due diligence and integration, Fidelity, UKG Pro.
